You are the reason we are able to get dogs off chains and inside!

Fostering

Fostering a dog is easy. All you have to have is a place inside to do it!  We are 100% foster based, so we can only take dogs off of chains with your help!

I’m afraid I’ll fall in love... how can I foster and not end up adopting them?

This is the #1 question we get.  Yes, you will fall in love with them! But honestly, that's what these dogs need.  They need someone to love them and show them how amazing life can be.

Every foster family falls in love with their dogs, which is the most rewarding part of being a foster.  Yes, it's sad on adoption day because they’re leaving the nest... but it’s really an incredibly joyous thing.  You selflessly took a dog that someone had overlooked (or worse) for years, and enabled them to become a loved, cherished member of a family.

A few comments from some of our seasoned fosters:

  • “It's OK to fall in love. Go into it knowing you want to fall in love with them!  You wouldn't be human if you didn't fall in love with them...and that's why you are doing this!  It's because you love dogs.  The more you love them and think you would keep all of them, the better foster you will be (we promise!)”

  • “Think long term. When you think about fostering, think about the next dog you are going to foster.  If you adopt every dog, you can't help the next one.”

  • “Dream for them. Think about their perfect family.  Your foster will have some quirks, but there is a perfect fit out there somewhere.  Think about their perfect family and dream for your foster dog.”

At Dogs Deserve Better, we have to think about the long term goals so that we can help as many dogs as we can.  You are a huge piece to that puzzle.

How long do you have to foster for (what if I can’t do it until the dog gets adopted)?

The length of time to foster can vary, but we’re so happy to work with you! You can foster for as little or as long as you want:

  • Weekend: foster for a weekend while another foster takes a vacation.  This is great for people who work long hours during the week.

  • Week: foster for a week while we wait for space in a rescue who has committed to taking the dog.  This is great for people who have breaks (like students), or want a dog but can't have one long term... or if you just want to see what fostering is all about!

  • Month+: If you want to foster a dog until they get adopted or for a longer period, you’ll get to witness this beautiful transformation start to finish.

I have a situation that won’t allow me to take certain dogs (young kids, apartment with breed restrictions, live on a busy street, cats, etc.) Can I still help?

Let us know your situation and what you’re comfortable with and we can work with you!  We won’t overwhelm you, because we want you to come back!
